| Description of Image | Mounted wall tile created by artist Barry Brickell, showing the diesel ferry Ewen W.Alison (formerly the George and Francis Peat)leaving Devonport wharf with Mt. Victoria in the background. The ferry's original name was changed in 1951. Ewen and Alexander Alison founded the Devonport Steam Ferry Company in August 1881. | Historical Notes | Barry Brickell grew up in Devonport, and is an artist, conservationist and railway enthusiast. He now lives in the town of Coromandel, where he runs the Driving Creek Railway and Potteries. In June and July 2009 he was Visiting Writer at the Michael King Writer's Centre. |
