About the Oral History Collections

North Shore Libraries and Waitakere City Libraries hold oral history collections that members of the public may use. While oral histories are not available for loan (for privacy and copyright reasons), you are welcome to contact the libraries and arrange a time to come in and listen to the recordings and look at any of the associated documentation (which can include letters, photographs and notes). Rodney Libraries has yet to develop an oral history collection, but work in this area is planned.

Highlights of the Waitakere oral history collection include digital recordings of sessions from the Going West Books and Writers Festival held annually in Waitakere City and the Crown Lynn oral history project. North Shore highlights include the Women's suffrage centenary oral history project and the North Shore Branch of the Federation of University Women project. Both library collections also include recordings relating to the earlier history of their regions.

A fully searchable index to the Oral History Collections is not yet available on Local History Online, but work on this index (which will allow you to search across both Waitakere Library and North Shore Library oral history collections, or limit your search to the individual libraries) is currently under way. It is hoped to have this index available on Local History Online some time towards the end of 2009. Until then, information on the oral histories held by Waitakere City Libraries and North Shore Libraries can be found here:
