Local History Online brings together for the first time the existing digital and electronic local history records of North Shore, Waitakere and Rodney Libraries. On this site you will find indexes to the community newspapers, archives and oral histories of the three libraries and a collection of digital heritage images of the region.
Reprints of newspaper articles and images can be ordered from this site. Archives and oral histories are not available for loan, but researchers are welcome to visit the library where they are held (the contributing library is noted in each item record). See Conditions of Use and Ordering for more information on ordering and access.
Community libraries have an important role in collecting, preserving and promoting the local history of their areas for the benefit of the people they serve. North Shore and Waitakere City Libraries already had existing local history electronic indexes and digitised photographs that needed an online home. Rodney Library began indexing its own local papers in 2008 and has recently received a significant community newspaper photograph collection.
In 2006, the three libraries joined together to establish a joint project with Datacom (NZ) to make these indexes and images available online. Greenstone open-source digital library software was chosen because of its flexibility and ease of use. In late 2006 DL Consulting, who develop for and contribute to Greenstone, were contracted to develop the back-end database, data entry module and the public user screens for this site in conjunction with the Library-Datacom Project Team. The site was formally launched in 2009.
