About this site

Local History Online brings together the digital local history records originally held by the public library systems of North Shore City Council, Waitakere City Council and Rodney District Council. In 2010, these three library systems merged with Auckland City Libraries, Manukau Libraries, Franklin Libraries and Papakura Library to form the new city-wide Auckland Libraries.

On this site, you will find digital images and indexes to community newspapers, archives and oral histories relating to West Auckland, Rodney and the North Shore held at the following Auckland libraries: Takapuna (North Shore), Waitakere (West Auckland) and Whangaparoa (Rodney). You can also visit any of these libraries in person to use their local history collections.

If you are interested in ordering copies of newspaper articles or images, you will find information about how to do that here: Conditions of Use and Ordering . (You'll also find downloadable order forms and price lists at the same link).

Oral history recordings and archives are not available for loan or copying, but you are welcome to visit the libraries in person to listen to or view these, and in some cases we may have transcripts or abstracts we can copy and send to you. To find out more about oral histories and archives or visit the libraries in person, you can contact us here: Contact details

Project background

Community libraries have an important role in collecting, preserving and promoting the local history of their areas for the benefit of the people they serve. In 2006, Rodney, Waitakere and North Shore Libraries came as together to establish a joint project with IT company Datacom to make their separate newspaper indexes and digital images available online on a single website.

Greenstone open-source digital library software was chosen for the public interface because of its flexibility and ease of use, and the back-end database and digital object management software was provided by MySQL and Fedora. In late 2006 DL Consulting, who develop for and contribute to Greenstone, were contracted to develop the back-end database, data entry modules and the public user screens for this site in conjunction with the Library-Datacom Project Team. The site was formally launched in 2009. In 2010 when the local bodies of Auckland merged into a single Auckland Council, management of the Local History Online project transferred from Rodney, Waitakere and North Shore Libraries to the newly-formed Auckland Libraries.
