About the Waitakere Collections

Waitakere Library & Information Services Local History Collections

The Waitakere Library & Information Services local history research collection is located on the second floor of the Waitakere Central Library, Ratanui Street, Henderson, Waitakere City. The collection contains published and unpublished material on the heritage of West Auckland, and includes books, magazines, newspapers, research files, ephemera, photographs, personal papers, community archives and over 200 oral histories.

Most branch libraries also have a small reference file about their local area, as well as general books on West Auckland that may be borrowed. These branch libraries are situated at New Lynn, Glen Eden, Titirangi, Te Atatu and Massey (http://www.waitakere.govt.nz/CnlSer/libs/libraries.asp).

The Local History Collections at Waitakere Central Library are accessed via the J.T. Diamond Reading Room, named for John Thomas (Jack) Diamond, who researched and collected material on the history and industries of the West Auckland region (from Muriwai to Waterview). His personal papers and research library were donated to Waitakere Libraries in 2001. The collection contains material on Maori and the archaeology of the Waitakere Ranges, brick and pottery industries, and the timber industry. It also includes approximately 10,000 photographs, both prints and negatives. The negative collection (8,500) is being systematically digitised and will be added in due course to the Local history Online Image Collection.

From the Waitakere Collections page you can access a collection of digital images of West Auckland and search an index of articles published since 2002 in the major West Auckland suburban newspapers.
