| Description Summary | Transcript of an interview with Phil Bourne for the Glen Eden Oral History Project. Phil comments on photographs of Glen Eden's cane factory. Recalls Fred and Mrs Fitt, and Harry Douglas. He describes the chairs made from imported seagrass and mentions the business history of the building. Phil recalls other Glen Eden businesses; Smythe's bullock team; political activist Mrs Tyrell; boyhood pranks with explosives; and, the testing of Auckland's first crematorium in 1923. He mentions the 1918 influenza epidemic and a fire during a film screening in the Town Hall. He describes the operations and volunteers of the Voluntary Fire Service, including a story of Alfie Thomas running over a brass fireman's hat. Phil mentions Vicky Main's bullock team and kauri logging; the introduction of the steel blue ladybird (woolly aphid control); and, recalls many local Glen Eden identities. |
