| Description Summary | Transcript of an interview with Sam Leadbeater for the Glen Eden Oral History Project. Sam recalls the residents of Glen Eden. He describes his sister Winnie rolling cigarettes and making hand-made chocolates. He recalls the magic lantern shows in Glen Eden and going to the pictures in New Lynn; strawberry picking and growing daffodils. Sam recalls 'train jumping' from Glen Eden to Whangarei during the Depression and describes his first job milking cows. He also talks about driving horses for the Maungataupere Dairy Factory and getting free meals at the port on the weekends. He mentions moving south and working in the goldfields. Sam recalls serving in the Territorials, being part of an 'essential service' (a drycleaner) and being called up for service in the Home Guard. He describes the Depression - the unemployed, being on relief work, and the formation of Glen Eden roads; the location of businesses and families in the area; the water supply; playing a gramophone; and the local vineyards. |
