| Description Summary | John describes his family background, his childhood in Mt Albert during World War II - going to movies, playing games, the American Army Camp at Western Springs and the fact that his father was serving overseas. He recalls the move to Ranui and describes the orchards and the house. He details selling up and moving to Henderson. John recalls country schooling and pies for school lunch; leisure and recreation and holidays at Mt Albert. Apprenticed to the Auckland Harbour Board, he describes facilities on the waterfront and tells of going to sea. He recalls meeting his wife Kiri and raising their family. John mentions playing 'housie' in Mr Simcock's shed and other social events, local identities, migrant families, housing in Ranui, and the Queen's 1953 visit to Henderson. He recalls hard financial times, the lining of clothes with flour bags and sending food parcels to Britain. |

| Other Notes | Born in 1938 at Mt Albert, John is one of three sons of Alpha and Hugh Munro. He trained as an fitter and turner gaining marine certification. John married Kiri (Kingi) in 1948 and has two children. Commissioned by the Ranui Action Project. |
