| Description Summary | Raman details how his father Parbhu Patel came to New Zealand in 1936 from India. He describes life as a migrant and details settling into New Zealand society. Raman recalls his parents opening a corner shop [grocery] in Glen Eden and details how they became an integral part of the community. Raman describes working in the shop and life in Glen Eden in the early 1960s. He mentions his father's role in the 1951 Waterfront Strike and how his father gifted land to the Plunket Society in Glen Eden. Raman describes meeting his wife; running the shop; the introduction of supermarkets; and, the eventual sale of the family shop. |
