| Description Summary | Dargaville born Tony Barbarich, recounts the story of his grand parents and parents lives, their emmigration to NZ in the early part of the 20th century, their work life through the depression and his early life in Napier. He explains the family move to Auckland, his apprenticeships and schooling in the 1940's, his father's work history, his own work, paying for a car with rabbit skins and joining the Dalmatian Society in 1948. He describes the clubs at the time, changes to the society, his involvement in dancing and playing in the society orchestra, activities of the younger generation in the society, orchardists and fishermen and market gardeners in his family and club. He recalls the hard working Dalmatian community, their success, the decline of the language, the good relationship between Maori and Dalmatians, animosity between Kiwi's and Dalmatian's and the importance of keeping the Dalmatian culture alive. |
