| Description Summary | Boaz Habib a committee member of WEB talks about his migrant experience arriving as a teenager in 1995 after living in Dubai and Pakistan where he was born. He talks about his first home in Orakei and going to Selwyn and Henderson College in Auckland. He talks about how he faced ethnic discrimination in school initially till other students got to know him. He also talks how going to Auckland University engineering school was a refreshing change as he met a diaspora of students from various ethnic and migrant backgrounds like him. He talks about the main differences in his values from New Zealanders, one of which was respect for elders and relationship between family members. He also talks about how growing up in NZ caused a shift in own values and accepting the NZ culture and values such as emphasis on individualism He talks about the reason for joining WEB in the beginning was due to his father who was then the President of WEB. But he was soon was inspired by WEB vision, which was to empower the Ethnic communities in Auckland and fight for their justice and equality. He hopes continue making presentations about WEB at various forums and would like to see more ethnic people in local boards. |
