| Description Summary | This recording is part of the 21 Voices project recording the stories of poll tax payer descendants by the Chinese New Zealand Oral History Foundation Inc.
Chinese born Kenneth Chan describes his early childhood in Canton, travel to New Zealand in 1939 and meeting his father for the first time. He recalls family life, working in the family fruit shop and his school years. He mentions other fruit shop owners and the support of the small Chinese community. He explains his grandparent's experience of settlement in New Zealand, the development of his father's vineyard, his own and other family members involvement in the wine industry. He talks about meeting his wife, their marriage and children and his work in the Air Force as a youth. |
