Description | The portable wooden war memorial for Takapuna's old soldiers will no more be wheeled out for Anzac Day ceremonies. In 1988-89 the North Shore City Council took over the area ocupied by the Takapuna War Memorial Hall and RSA club and bowling green, for a new civic centre and library. The makeshift plywood cenotaph that was built from their new relocated clubrooms in Northcote Road was never intended to be used for more than a couple of years. Council has paid $75,000 for the memorial, which is 6m high and 8nm wide and was designed by architect Brendan Rawson. Discussions over getting a new permanent replacement spanned the terms of five RSA club presidents. |
