Historical Notes | These street lights lights were the first sodium vapour lights to be used for roadway lighting in New Zealand, and were installed between Devonport and Belmont by the Waitemata Power Board. The lights were officially switched on on November 9 1936 by the Hon. H.G.R. Mason, Minister of Internal Affairs. This photograph was probably taken by Council staff around that time.
