In 1902 Mr Oliphant sold to John Knight who made a short cut for himself to reach Takapuna. This was the beginning of Wairau Road. About 1908 Mr Knight sold to Ewen Alison who eventually subdivided the land into 2, 5 and 10-acre blocks. He and neighbours, the Polands and Wadhams, gave land to the Waitemata County Council which formed the road. The Wairau Valley was zoned industrial in 1968. Flooding was a major problem from the Wairau Stream and in 1973 work began on realigning the creek and lining it with concrete. Two of these settlers, Mr Wray and Mr Archer, started a town milk supply to Devonport. As well as the Northcote, Glenfield area, an area from O'Neills Point around Belmont to Narrow Neck and Hauraki Road was always quoted as having the most and best quality gum in the Auckland district.
